MAGAZINE INTERVIEW

The ANTHEM Local Magazine – August 2026

Author Spotlight - Daryl Reed

By Andrea Rodgers

For author Daryl Reed, storytelling is all about transporting readers into unforgettable worlds. Whether writing adventures for children or suspenseful crime novels, he enjoys creating stories that keep readers hooked with twist and turns until the final page.

"The bug bit me in high school," Daryl says, recalling how authors like Mark Twain and J.R.R. Tolkien inspired his imagination. Although life took him in a different direction, retirement finally gave him the opportunity to pursue writing full-time.

Born in Springfield, Missouri, Daryl served in the U.S. Army before spending 25 years with the U.S. Border Patrol in San Diego, retiring in 2016 as a Supervisory Border Patrol Agent. During his career, he oversaw media operations for the National Geographic television series Border Wars, led public relations initiatives, participated on nationwide hiring boards, and earned two Commissioner's Awards along with the prestigious Attorney General's Award.

His writing career began with an impromptu bedtime story for his sister-in-law's children. After accidentally forgetting to name the main character, Daryl turned the mistake into the foundation for The Boy with No Name, the first book in his children's fantasy trilogy, The Invincible Crew. The series follows a group of magical children as they discover extraordinary abilities while learning the value of friendship, courage, and teamwork.

Daryl later shifted to crime fiction with A Killer's Diary, a psychological thriller set in Southern Nevada. The story follows mysterious deaths in a Henderson retirement community and was inspired by conversations with fellow members of the Anthem Authors writing group.

Music inspired his Border Town series. After listening to Jim Croce's "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," Daryl imagined the untold story behind the famous character, then created a gripping series centered on five childhood friends growing up along the Mexican border. He is currently writing the third installment.

For Daryl, every story begins with an idea that refuses to let go. He’s spent the entire day writing. Although finishing a novel can take one to two years, he says editing is the greatest challenge. "A writer never finishes," he explains. "You have to just stop at some point and go to press."

Whether writing for young readers or adults, Daryl hopes every reader experiences the same enjoyment he felt while creating each story. You can find more information about his books at www.invinciblecrew.com or at Daryl’s Extra on Facebook. His next public signing will be September 12th at Copper Cat Books on West Horizon Ridge Blvd.
